Vincent and Raphaël Bereche work with a range of terroirs, mostly in the north of the region near Reims. The quality starts with thoughtful viticulture and low yields from a high percentage of old vines (many planted in the 1960s and 1970s). Upon their arrival, the brothers stopped all use of chemical herbicides and returned to labour-intensive manual cultivation of their vines. Typically 35% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay and 35% Pinot Meunier, hand-harvested, natural yeast fermentation in barrel. 30-40% reserve … more

Bindi Kostas Rind Chardonnay 2023
"This is a very fine Kostas Rind, coming from the volcanic soils over clay on the lower Bindi Chardonnay plantings from 1988. Destemmed berries go into the press and the juice is taken straight from the tray into the barrels, around 30% of which are new small French oak. The fermentation occurs without yeast addition and the wine remains on all lees for ten months until just prior to bottling. The 2023 is very fine and pure, with a vibrant … more

Bindi Pyrette Heathcote Shiraz 2021
"This project now goes back two decades, to 2001. The seasonal stamp is always there, these are not formulaic wines scrubbed and rubbed into an overriding house style, for the harvest date and winemaking is focused in ensuring a balanced wine that shows the markings of the year. (As James Halliday says, a Pinot Noir winemaker's Shiraz!). The 2021 is a delicious and harmonious continuation of the style showing complex dark fruits, earth, spice and graphite. The palate is initially … more

Bird on a Wire Chardonnay 2021
Willowlake Vineyard has long been the source of some of the Yarra Valley's most impressive Chardonnays. Located in the Upper Yarra, this predominantly north-facing site is home to 40-year-old vines and red volcanic soils with gravel over mudstone. This is the swansong for BOAW Chardonnay from this vineyard, but 2021 was a heck of a year to finish, as Philip Rich's note below makes clear.
"Whole-bunch pressed to barrel with almost full solids; 25% mlf and 32% new oak. Sadly, … more

A stand out example of pure Tempranillo organically grown in Spain's Rioja.
Soft and mineral, a delicious mix of red and dark fruit. Open and expressive, with nutty tannins and a lick of spicy acidity, it's clearly Rioja and perfectly varietal Tempranillo. Matured in tank so the wines stays fresh and vibrant and allows the the fruit characters to fully shine through.

Bodegas Barrero 'Gabriela' Manzanilla Balbaina Alta 375ml
Bodegas Barrero are an undiscovered treat here in Australia. Much used by the Navazos project, this bodega makes some wonderful Sherries, of which this is a terrific starting point.
This is superb value.
Classic flor notes dominate the aromatics, but don't overpower the wine - there are still nuances of fresh bread, almond and saline notes. The palate is quite delicate but wonderfully fresh with excellent racy, salty flor-driven Manzanilla character.

Bodegas El Maestro Sierra 12 Years Old Amontillado
El Maestro's Amontillados are aged for six years under a full flor before being fortified and aged for at least another six years.
El Maestro Sierra Amontillado displays a delicate blend of roasted almonds, dried apple and more oxidative caramel and cedar characters. Like all the El Maestro Sierra wines, Amontillado is bottled en rama: with minimal fining or filtration.' Notes from the importer

Bodegas El Maestro Sierra 15 Year Old Oloroso 500ml
'The Oloroso 15 años is the youngest Oloroso produced by this house. The fact that it comes with an age statement (other than the official VOS and VORS) is quite rare in the Jerez region. [...] dry, nutty start. Hazelnuts, brazil nuts. Umami notes of beef stock and dried mushrooms. On the other end of this earthy, darker side there is a brightness of bitter oranges and fresh figs.' Bodegas El Maestro Sierra Fino 750ml
'A rich nose with intense flor. Cashew and walnuts, with hints of toasted pumpkin seeds. Some ripe apple. Briney olive juice. Light rancio notes as well, even a few cheesy hints which work well here. [...] A really characterful Fino that is a great ambassador for this artisan bodega.' SherryNotes.com

Bodegas El Maestro Sierra Pedro Ximenez
'Made from Pedro Ximénez grapes, which are sun dried before being brought into the winery, this PX is fortified to 15% alcohol and aged for 5 years.
It's a decadent sweet wine that's brilliant with deserts and cheese but - in keeping with the house style of El Maestro Sierra - there's a fresh acidity here that ensures it's never cloying.' Notes from the importer
