Decanter Magazine: Favourite Fortified Wine, 1998 Decanter Fine Wine Encounter (one of three). "Madeira is having a hard time, especially after a difficult vintage in 1998. Henriques & Henriques produce an outstanding range of 10-year-old Madeiras, but their 15-year-old Malmsey, with its scented, high-toned aromas and wonderfully sinewy flavors, is quintessential and better than many a vintage wine. It is also a bargain."

This mindbogglingly complex Malvasia (weighting in at 20.45 alc/vol and just over 100 grams of residual sugar, balanced by delicious mouth-watering acidity) has been matured using the traditional Canteiro method in Henriques' purpose built lodges in Camara de Lobos. The wines are cask-aged in lodge attics, against south-facing windows, and at 20 years maturation thus, represents the best of Vinhos de Canteiro. This extraordinary wine is redolent of dried Turkish black figs and toffee, with penetrating citrus oils, toasted nuts and … more

Despite often being made in a rough and rustic style, this Touriga dominant blend is all pink lady apples, fragrant rose petals and graphite. Soft and shapely, there's a lovely, deep core of fruit that wraps around tongue-tingling acidity and an undeniably moreish finish.

"From an emerging wine region, just over the border in South Australia. We sought out Coola Road, wanting to explore new expressions of Pinot Noir. The soils here are limestone littered with flint rocks and though it is warmer that the Otways, the climate here is very maritime with almost constant sea breezes keeping temperature moderate." Often lost in the shadow of its dominating cousin, Pinot Noir, Meunier is the shier, prettier one of the two. Take the Anti-Hero Meunier for example, its vibrant and breathy, bursting at the seams with scents of tart cranberries, fresh raspberries and whispers of green tea and pink peppercorn.

Heroes is a bold name for a winery run by one of the humblest winemakers we know. James is all about showing that his vines are the real heroes, making fresh & unfussy wines with great varietal character. His Sauv does just that, verbena and tart passionfruit acid, tempered by a soft, smooth palate.

Grapes are sourced exclusively from vineyards in Balbaina and Miraflores, and only the free run juice is used for Oloroso Faraon. It's a dry oloroso - deep, rich and complex with a really intense flavour of grilled nuts but an astonishingly fresh acidity. A well-balanced and insatiably moreish style of Sherry that manages to walk a fine line between sweetness and richness. Hidalgo's tradmark minerality underscores notes of dried fig, walnut and caramel.

A vintage sherry from 12 old barrels filled in 1986 from the El Cuadrado vineyard. The wine matured for 20 years in the San Francisco bodega and 2800 bottles were filled in 2007.
An epic sherry; smells mature, nutty and oily. A full, elegant palate shows the right weight and acidic cut, while salty flavors of peanut and caramel finish long, nutty. It has the elegance of Sanlucar with classy intensity and concentration. Some black treacle, cloves and wood spices. … more

Highland Park 12 Year Old remains one of the gold- standard malts for other distillery bottlings to aspire to. Deep gold in colour with a nose of heather and wood smoke Highland Park has a deceptively complex palate that ranges from sweet maltiness to smokey peat and savoury spices. This is a whisky that never lets you down.

La Guita is the only sherry produced at the bodegas Hijos de Rainera Pérez Marín in Sanlúcar de Barrameda (part of the Grupo Estévez). The name comes from the old Andalucian slang guita meaning cash (its founder was renowned for wanting to be paid in cash). The more common meaning though is string (hence guitar), highlighted by the fact that every bottle has a string around its neck.
Now owned (since 2007) by Valdespino.
