Pinotage is a hybrid variety created in South Africa in 1924. It is, not unsurprisingly given the name, a cross of Pinot Noir & Hermitage (Cinsault). It is Pinot-esque in colour and appearance with a palate that is similar to Pinot/Gamay but a little deeper. The aromatics are of bright red cherries, plum, dried herbs and spice, while the palate displays vivid dark red fruit. It has a fine chalky structure with a balanced acidity and lovely length.
