As ever, the Pikes Riesling makes for a lovely, crisp drink in its youth - though with great potential to develop over the next 5-10 years. Typically showing fresh lemon and lime zest, white florals and tropical fruit notes, in time with will develop into flint-like mineral qualities and intensity of flavour.

Pirie Non Vintage Northern Tasmania is widely recognised for the quality of sparkling wine produced in the true cool climate of 41-42°S. The first Pirie Sparkling (1995 Vintage) did much to establish this reputation. Today the story continues with Pirie Non Vintage, a full flavoured Cuvee from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, boasting complexity from base wines produced in the unique sparkling terroirs of the region.
This year, the POCW team decided to see if a blend of the three white grapes they have in the cellar might work as well as the Tradition red. They were blown away by the result, and so were we. This is one-third Chardonnay from a new Dominique Laurent Tronçais cask and two-thirds Marsanne and Roussanne. It has all the generosity of this producer's Marsanne/Roussanne with the cut and thrust of the Chardonnay (not to mention some seriously classy oak). … more

Distributor notes "Podere Laila is a family-owned winery situated in Corinaldo, within the rolling hills of the Marche region in central Italy, approximately 20 km from the Adriatic Sea. Established by siblings Andrea and Chiara Refe, the estate spans 30 hectares, equally dedicated to cultivating white and red grape varieties. The winery is named in honor of their mother, Laila. Their white wines, particularly those under the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC, are well-regarded for their quality and expression … more

The Poderi Aldo Conterno 2016 Barolo Bussia Colonnello shows dark fruit intensity, dried cherry, spice, licorice and tilled earth. The wine delivers its aromas in a direct and immediate manner, with menthol and balsam herb fitting into oaky aromas of sweet spice. For whatever reason, I notice the oak more in Colonnello, but this will relax with time. The wine will be ready to drink after the 10-year mark.

One of our favourite producers in Chianti - 100% organically-grown Sangiovese, the Poggerino house style shows more fruit emphasis, but with power, weight & complexity.
'The 2022 Chianti Classico is a pretty rich wine for Il Poggerino. It shows the heat and dryness of the year in its intense dark red fruit. Even so, Piero Lanza has done a terrific job of avoiding the hard tannins that penalize other wines. This plush, open-knit Chianti Classico will drink well right out … more

'The 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva Bugialla is a potent, brooding wine. Macerated dark cherry, licorice, leather, tobacco and smoke all flesh out over time. The 2020 saw a whopping 50 days on the skins, with malolactic fermentation in cement and then two years in 20-25hL Slavonian oak casks. There is a bit of new oak … more

The palate is an explosion of pink lady apple, nectarine, white peach, rounded out with notes of honey, freshly torched creme brulee finishing with kaffir lime, candied citrus peel, toasted almond driven by steely acidity.
