If you been led astray by clunky old-school Rioja, let Bodegas Sela’s Roda 1 set you on the right path. Eschewing the traditional hierarchical labels, they instead have two bottlings - red and blue. Picked from a single site, grapes with more red hued berries going to the Roda, and the darker purple-blues going to Roda 1. It spends 16 months in French oak, and a further 2 years in bottle before release, allowing the dark intensity of the wine to integrate with its oak. The wine itself is a stunner, blueberry and Damson plum on the entry that leads into sarsaparilla spice. 2019 is probably Rioja's best year since 2011, so definitely one to put in the cellar if you can bear to wait till 2035-2040.
