One of the foremost exceptional producers of a wildly undervalued region, is Trimbach from the sloping hills of Alsace. The fruit comes from the Geisberg Grand Cru, a partial component of their legendary cuvée Fréderic Emile. This is a single vineyard cuvée however, coming from old vines on a steep terraced slope.
The latest instalment in Jake Winther's Trutta label sees an exploration into his more textural side, with this minimal intervention Pinot Gris on skins enjoying a fruity and aromatic, yet grippy and tannic mouth feel. Suitable for a summer barbeque or by the fire in winter, this Pinot Gris ticks all the boxes.

Harcourt's cool climate makes the absolute best of the rich, spicy notes in this Viognier dominant blend. It's textural and flavoursome, with honeyed apricot and toasted almonds scents that waft headily out of the glass. Yet the palate is crisp and fresh, with a wash of natural acidity.

"Featuring the Proprietor's Grandfather, Sidney Neill - Wine Merchant, on the label, Picnic is our perennial favourite - the wine to enjoy every day and a wonderful introduction to the pleasure of Central Otago Pinot Noir. The Last Chance is a beautifully sited two-hectare terrace perched in bright clear air above the Earnscleugh Valley, carefully planted with well-tended Burgundian clone pinot noir. It nestles amongst a small cluster of the World's most southerly vineyards and takes its name from the watercourse that runs through its heart, hand dug by gold miners in the 1860s, The Last Chance. Soils are raw schist gravels that are low in fertility and require careful nurturing.

"13% whole cluster, Native yeast. Hand harvested. We picked on two separate days. The first pick we destemmed the fruit and fermented in our square cement tank. The second pick was whole cluster fermented in stainless steel. After fermentation, both lots were pressed and matured separately. Always a native fermentation under this roof, this wild animal is only slightly tamed by its elegance and restraint. Fresh pine, oregano, cranberry, concentrated raspberries, violets, chamomile, and black peppercorn. The … more

"The fruit was hand harvested on two dates to allow for more ripeness and complexity. Both lots were destemmed and fermented in stainless-steel vats and a new puncheon barrel. After three weeks on the skins, the wine was pressed to French oak (50% new) where it matured for 20 months until it was racked and bottled. 2019 was a super aromatic year. It shows in this wine especially. Fresh mint, smoky … more

Winery Notes "2018 was another strong Semillon vintage in the Hunter Valley. Dry, warm conditions that were similar to 2003 meant cropping levels were much smaller than average and produced wines with robust flavours and softer acids. The grapes were handpicked and sorted in the vineyard. Once arriving at the winery, the fruit was very lightly crushed and pressed with a small percentage of stalks. After a relatively cool fermentation, the wine spent a minimal time on yeast lees before … more

Sourced from a small selection of our favourite shiraz blocks, the grapes were both hand and machine picked before fermentation in the traditional open top vats. The wine was then matured in older, large format French oak casks. These 2,700 litre casks highlight the fruit purity whilst making sure that oak isn’t the dominant character.

Halliday Review 97pts - 'Great wines like Tyrrell's Vat 1 Semillon are celebrated for their clarity of expression and remarkable intensity - qualities that shine brightly in the '19 vintage. The mid-palate is beautifully open and generous, showcasing powerful citrus flavours and micro hints of flint, wet river stones, lemon curd and greengages. The true strength of this vintage lies in its refreshing, succulent mid-palate, harmonious balance and ultra-cleansing finish, making it a superb accompaniment to food. It is at … more
