The Matelica valley in Marche is nestled amongst the Appenines, where diurnal range is broad and the soil glitters with chalk and mica. The way that Stefano Zoli writes of these hills is divine; his wine notes read more like poems than tech sheets. It's hard not to become enthralled with images of light-dappled hillsides, sunshine drenching crystalline berries on the vine. His wine is no less evocative, fragrant lilies, crushed quartz and crisp green pears drizzled with lemon honey waft out of each glass like incense. He recommends pairing his Verdicchio di Matellica 2021 with music - more specifically, "Pushin on" by Quantic Soul Orchestra.
