Biodynamic. Together with its sister-in-arms, Cuvée Edmond, Dix-Neuf is the antithesis of modern 'textbook' Sancerre. This jaw-dropping Sancerre is drawn from the oldest vines in the Moussière vineyard (approximately 100 years of age) cropped at Grand Cru Burgundy-level yields (in fact, the lower end of this range). The wine was fermented and raised in 2,000-litre, tronconique wooden tanks for 12 months before a spell in steel, again on lees. Only 500 cases per year get to see the light of … more

Petite Moussière is Mellot's entry-level Pinot, drawn from younger vines on the Saint-Doulchard marls of La Moussière. Although the name of the wine suggests something light and crunchy, even here there is a lovely plumpness of fruit and vinous depth. Saying that, Alphonse Mellot is aiming for a more open and approachable style here, so this fruit experiences more delicate maceration and shorter aging than for the Moussière proper.

Domaine Thomas is run by the ninth generation of the family. Jean and his wife Ginette own 13 hectares at Verdigny, mostly planted to Sauvignon blanc. This is Sancerre at its flinty, minerally, racy best. Very clean, fresh and flavoursome wine at a moderate 12.5% alcohol. This is as all Sancerre should be - absolutely no new oak.
Based in Verdigny, they farm their vineyards La lutte raisonnée and resolutely respect their unique terroir. The primary fermentation commences spontaneously and … more

Importers Notes - "This has superb dimension, unlike any other Sancerre - bright lemon, fresh ginger and white pepper perfumes are lifted and hover over a rocky minerality; the mouth is equally defined yet is made rich with a sensation of silky, full-bodied white fruits. The mouthfeel is chiseled and pure with layers of concentrated flavour. This used to be called "Jeunes Vignes" but François has been vinifing "Caillottes" separately since 2005; the vineyard name refers to a type of … more

Importers Notes - "From a plot just over 1 hectare in size in Les Monts Damnés, the imposing sweep of vineyards that look down driectly upon Chavignol. This has a deeper tone and pitch than the 'Caillotes' and perhaps a touch more concentration. François's Monts Damnés is clearly the best example of this famous Cru. Reflecting the excellent vintage, this wine is cool and compact, a taut, tightly coiled core of briny minerality; such tension, and exquisite balance. Superb and … more

Importers Notes - "This vineyard is where François has his oldest vines, these days the average age is about 40 years because he has had to replant many of the very old vines as the Sauvignon is susceptible to viruses as it ages and so past 60 years old the vine is usually close to unproductive. This vineyard produces the most flamboyant wines in this collection, there are subtle notes of orchard fruit and more power but don't let that … more

Importers Notes - "Cotat's rosé is cult and one of a very small group that benefit from (and in some ways demand) aging. Just like Cotat's whites, with age, it's the terroir that comes to dominate the rosé with a singular minerality. There may be a silky texture and gentle floral notes, but it's the stony minerality that defines old Cotat rosé. Sadly, they're as rare as they are beautiful."

A small family run domaine that is nestled away in Bue, one of the most highly regarded parcels in Sancerre. The wine itself is textbook Sancerre - lean and crisp, with refreshingly mineral elements to the palate, and restrained but undeniably varietal notes of fresh cut herbs and tar, underripe passionfruit.
