Hiroyuki Kusuda is one of Martinborough's most iconic producers, making some extraordinary examples of Syrah in a region oft overlooked for the variety. The fruit comes mostly from Massale selection vine material taken from Dry River, a clone believed to be Northern Rhone's Serine clone and best recognised for its authentically Rhône-esque profile. You can see this in the wine's bright, tart fruit up front, redcurrant and raspberry, combined with dark savoury notes of violet, cracked black pepper and charred red capsicums. 2021 vintage in Martinborough saw early frosts leading to tiny yields of immensely concentrated berries, with an arid summer and warm Autumn winds encouraging structure and density. All that to say, 2021 is doubtlessly a collector’s year, with the best of what the wine has to show likely peaking from 2028-2032.
