Johannes Hasselbach has well and truly hit his stride after taking the winemaking reins from his late father Fritz a few years back. Applying a cautious approach initially, Johannes has grown, and the quality of the wines equally so with him.
Pettentha is located beyond the southern end of the Rothenberg Vineyard, on red shale, but slightly more weathered than it's famous neighbour. These are the steepest parcels Gunderloch own.

The 2024 Riesling Niersteiner Pettenthal Grosses Gewächs begins with a slight smokiness that proceeds to marry into the creamy juiciness that characterizes the palate. A touch of petrichor adds extra verve, bringing that lovely red apple-tinged savor to the fore. This is power and grace in equal measure. It has drive and fill but also contour, moving ahead with determination and energy. This is salty with a deliciously zesty, textural footprint. (Bone-dry).
