Discover Greece

We're delighted to welcome back our fearless leader, Cameron Kidd, who ventured out on a rather impromptu trip to Greece. Returning early last week, he's arrived with more Greek wines than we know what to do with.

Unfortunately, Greek wine is often left out of the conversation when discussing fine wine regions, despite their unquestionably long history and wealth of unique native varieties. Years of economic difficulties (to put it mildly) has seen the industry suffer greatly, with classic European varieties grown in place of the natives.

But all hope was not lost, and many years at the grindstone has seen a slow but steady rebuild led by a handful of stalwart producers, as well as an influx of fresh talent. Read on to hear Cam's tasting notes on some of the exciting new wines that have joined our shelves.

2022 Thymiopoulos Earth & Sky Xinomavro | $70

Apostolos Thymiopoulos may be relatively new in the winemaking world, but his family have a long history of winegrowing in the region. Moving from grower to producer is never an easy move, but Apostolos is the exception to that rule. His wines are a fabulous expression of place and quality.

2023 Douloufakis Dafnios Vidiano | $39

Nikos Douloufakis has almost single-handedly revived the Vidiano grape, a rare, indigenous white variety from the island of Crete. Not unlike the better known grape Assyrtiko, Vidiano handles heat with aplomb and makes a crisp, remarkably textural wine. Almost Semillon-like in profile, green apples and fresh cut herbs, a waft of honey and chalky finish.

2022 Argyros 'Cuvee Monsignori' Old Vine Assyrtiko | $160

Assyrtiko from one of Argyros' oldest vineyards, where vines are cultivated in the traditional basket style, called "kouloura". Weaving them into nests, low to the ground, they are protected from Santorini's harsh winds. Cuvee Monsignori sees no oak, allowing the saline drive and fine tannin inherent to Assyrtiko to shine. My #1 wine of the trip.
