“…classy and impeccably balanced” Antonio Galloni, on the 2022 G.D. Vajra Baroli
Since 2018, Barolo has seen completely different vintage conditions with each new year. Each came with its own hardships, but a ‘difficult’ vintage does not always mean a ‘poor’ vintage. Giuseppe Vajra put it best, when asked for his thoughts on the season -
“Often ‘difficult’ gets translated into ‘bad’. But if you think about our own lives, at least it is true for me that some of the hardest moments were the moments that made me mature the most.”
Having tasted the 2022 release ourselves, we can confidently tell you that G.D. Vajra rose to the challenges of the season. The vintage started hot, a foreboding sign that had everyone on the edge of their seats. However, a cool change not two days into the season brought the vines back into balance.
There are elements of the cooler days evident in the fine, floral notes that persist through the complement of wines, and the filigreed tannins that are very different in shape to those of warm years like ‘18 or ‘19. Yet, the early heat developed structure and body that supports the brighter notes beautifully.
