| Henriques & Henriques Since the 15th century, the Henriques were the largest landowners in the Câmara de Lobos area. It was here that the first vines were planted by Zarco between 1420 and 1425 when he settled in the small natural harbour. The initial planting was made on the slopes of Pico da Torre, which belonged to the Henriques, and up the rift valleys of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos and Quinta Grande, which are traditionally considered to produce the best Madeiras.
Since the earliest times, the Henriques played an important part in the viticulture and winemaking on the Island. In 1850 the family's interests were established as a firm, which by 1925 concentrated on shipping its own wines rather than supplying them to the other shippers.
A new vineyard was planted at Quinta Grande in January 1995 at 600 to 750 metres above sea level. Its 10 hectares (25 acres) constitute the largest single vineyard on the Island and it is also the first on Madeira to be mechanised.
Henriques & Henriques is now the largest independent producer and shipper of Madeira Wines and the only Madeira House who owns vineyards. The company relies on the most recent technical innovations, keeping however the unbroken family tradition that has lasted for 500 years in the production of the finest Madeira wines.
