Released direct from the Jim Barry cellar. Every magnum has been opened, checked, topped up and recorked by the Jim Barry team in 2022.
The origins of ‘The McRae Wood’ are closely linked to the family’s flagship Shiraz, ‘The Armagh’. Following its creation in 1985 and subsequent success, the winery was unable to meet demand for ‘The Armagh’. Unwilling to compromise on quality to meet this need, Peter and his brothers decided to create a new wine in 1992, utilising fruit that was downgraded from the Armagh vineyard as well as superior parcels from the family’s other vineyards around the Clare Valley.
Given then age, it somehow still shows lifted notes of red and black berry fruits on the nose, a touch of graphite earthiness, savoury spice with well worn leather in support.
The palate is almost explosive with a melange of soft berries, earth, leather, forest floor and various other subtle woody spices. The tannins that are still present are very supple leading to a long and lingering finish. In its prime, this is wonderful example of Shiraz from Clare with age.
