For this tiny first release, the fruit was whole-bunch pressed and fermented/vinified on lees (mostly in tank) for eight months. Ten per cent was fermented and raised in amphora to bring more texture to the electric acidity of the fruit. While the Riesling freaks at Massolino think their 2018 will be more reflective of the style and transparency they hope to achieve in the future, this is one hell of a debut. It opens with scents of smoky citrus oil, loads of citrus pith and flint leading to a super steely, intense palate redolent of grapefruit, something nettle-like and again, loads of pithy freshness. There's only five grams residual. Overall, it's a super crunchy, firm and chalky Riesling with a unique personality. And it should encourage people in the region to think seriously about planting more Riesling! - Notes from Importer Bibendum
